March 2020 NPD Sales Results –

Despite the fact that many states issued take-out orders, and perhaps in part because of the COVID-19 threat, video game sales were up 35% from the previous year in March 2020, reaching $1.6 billion. This is the highest figure for March since 2008. Hardware sales were $461 million (up 63%), software sales were $739 million (up 34%) and accessories and game card sales were $397 million (up 12%).

The biggest winner in March 2020 is Nintendo. The Switch set a new record for the number of systems sold in a given month of March – and that includes 2017, when the Switch launched on March 3. Mars is on the market! NDP analyst Mat Piscatella took a closer look at the data and found that sales of switch products more than doubled during the year. In the first quarter of 2010, Switch posted the strongest hardware sales of any platform since Nintendo DS. In addition, more hardware units were sold in March than for any other system in history. Not surprisingly, there are reports of Switch equipment shortages worldwide.

Part of Switch’s huge sales increase can be attributed to the spectacular launch of Animal Crossing : New Horizons 20. Mars. It has already surpassed the lifetime sales of all previous Animal Crossing games. Let’s put that aside. It sold more copies in just two weeks than any other series in her lifetime. Wow! The game is now the third best-selling physical game of the month in Nintendo history. Only Super Smash Bros. Ultimate (Switch) and Super Smash Bros. Brawl (Wii) managed to sell more in their first few months. Keep in mind that NPD doesn’t have access to the number of digital copies sold, and given that Animal Crossing games are better suited for digital play than some of Nintendo’s other franchises, it’s entirely possible that New Horizons will ultimately prevail.

NPD tracks physical retail sales, but also sources digital data directly from publishers. But not all companies are participating. For example, Nintendo doesn’t share its first-party digital sales, and Activision Blizzard doesn’t supply its Battle.net sales. This table also does not include microtransactions, subscriptions, or anything other than the sale of the complete set. With this caveat in mind, this is best viewed as a very useful snapshot of a much more dynamic industry.
