On this day (April 28) in the history of Nintendo…

  • The Game & Watch series was released in Japan in 1980. This series of handheld electronic games, developed by Nintendo R&D1, was produced by Nintendo from 1980 to 1991. Designed by game designer Gunpei Yokoi, Game & Watch features a single game on the LCD screen, as well as a clock, alarm clock or both. It was Nintendo’s first video game and it was a huge success. The devices are based on a 4-bit processor from the Sharp SM5xx family, which includes a small ROM and RAM section and an LCD control circuit. However, prior to MAME emulation, it was mistakenly thought that each device used its own ASIC rather than its associated microcontroller. Cumulative sales of the series have reached 43.4 million units worldwide. Game & Watch has made portable video games very popular. Many toy companies have followed in Game & Watch’s footsteps, such as Tiger Electronics with its Star Wars-themed games. The Nintendo Game & Watch devices were eventually replaced by the original Game Boy.
  • The Ball was released in 1980 for Game & Watch Silver in Japan. In this action game developed by Nintendo R&D1, the doll’s arms move from left to right to catch balls that fall to the ground. The more points you get, the faster the balls become.
  • Snoopy Tennis was released in 1982 for the widescreen Game & Watch in Japan. In this action game developed by Nintendo R&D1, Charlie Brown and Snoopy play tennis. Charlie hits the balls and Snoopy has to climb up the branches and swing a bat to get them back. You get 2 points for every ball back from Charlie Brown and 3 points for every ball back from Lucy. If you miss, the ball will break a few bottles. Three strikes and the game is over.
  • Donkey Kong Junior was released on Game & Watch Table Top in Japan in 1983. In this Nintendo R&D1 action game, Mario captures Donkey Kong and his son, Donkey Kong Junior, must carry the key to the beginning of DK Castle while dodging wild birds. Junior can climb up and down on platforms on the lianas to get higher. He can go up with umbrellas and down with balloons to reach the DK castle. Open the four locks to free DK and get a bonus point.
  • Mario Cement Factory was released on Game & Watch Table Top in Japan in 1983. In this action game, developed by Nintendo R&D1, cement is fed into funnels via chutes at the top of the screen. Mario has to climb up and down moving platforms to pull the levers of the funnels that bring the cement to the trucks below. Each hopper can only hold three loads of cement before it spills over to the truckers. Keep moving and don’t let any of the bunkers overflow.
  • US. Clu Land was released in 1992 for the Family Computer Disk System in Japan. This puzzle game, developed by Nintendo, is a port of the arcade version. The game includes a number of new features, including a choice between beginner and expert modes, new exploration graphics, and the appearance of the Unira boss when you defeat multiple small Unira. This game was also available in Animal Crossing magazine, where it was called Clu Clu Land D in the US and Europe.
  • Tower SP was released in 2005 for the Game Boy Advance console in Japan. In this design and management remake of SimTower on PC, developed by Vivarium, the player is tasked with building a tower for Yama’s boss. Perhaps due to the limitations of the Game Boy Advance system, tower status (the highest tower level available) is achieved at a population of 2000, a rather difficult goal to achieve given the building height limitation of 50 stories (35 stories for a commercial tower).
  • The monsters from Dragon Quest: Joker 2 was released in Japan in 2010 for the Nintendo DS. In this role-playing game developed by Tose, the Monster Scouts are known for their talent in training monsters – they tame wild beasts and build teams of amazing creatures that they send into wild and savage battles against other Monster Scout teams. The bravest creatures meet each year at the Monster Scout Challenge, where they compete for the honour of becoming world champions. It’s hard enough to get into the monster arena where the event is taking place.
  • Tsukutte Utau Saru Band was released on DSiWare in Japan in 2010. In this rhythm game developed by Mu Mu, Prince Saruno and his subjects from the kingdom of Sarudamon come together to form a band. They have to compose the music they will play, write the lyrics and adapt them to the different themes given. You can start with simple keywords and your Monkey Band will automatically generate a song to play. You can also write longer passages for them. Share your songs wirelessly with your friends.
  • The first wave of Kirby amiibo was released in Japan in 2016 and featured Kirby, King Dedede, Meta Knight and Waddle Dee.
