Easy Starter House to Build

This guide covers the basic houses you can build as a beginner in Walheim. You can learn how to build your first home without using too many materials and without the smoke from a covered fire filling your home.

Before you start, you should know that you can create your own design. In this Valheim guide, we’ll show you the most effective way to get a starter house in the game.

Funds

You have to lay the foundation of your house first. To do this, a 1 meter long wooden pole is driven into the ground and then moved to the next position of the pole with a 2 meter long wooden beam.

We need a pillar of structural integrity in every corner. It will be the size of your house. If you want more, stretch it more than I do. It’s only two by three, which is enough for a bed, a chest, a workbench and a flashlight. The bonfire is installed outside and covers the entire house.

Floor and chimney

A bonfire is needed to get the rest of the buffalo, which greatly increases the regeneration of health and stamina. The better your protection (comfort), the longer this animal will last.

However, you don’t have to start a fire in your home, and if you’ve ever tried, you’ll find that the smoke puffs up pretty quickly and you start doing damage.

To avoid this, just put it outside, with a roof on it and not under it, and a wall on each side to protect it from the weather. As long as the roof is facing up and not down, smoke will escape from the building.

It’s practically a barn for your campfire. Due to its small size, it covers the entire building. While you’re at it, you’ll need a total of 6 rooms to fill this foundation with 2×2 wood floors.

Door and walls

Your building doesn’t need walls, it works just as well without them. But it provides protection from monsters, so that’s about it.

Start with a 2-foot wooden post in each corner at the top of the foundation, then fill in the empty space with a wooden wall. Place a half wooden wall where the windows should be. Also provide a set of wooden ladders for the entrance, since the building will be placed on a pedestal from the ground.

Complete the wall finish by applying another coat of Wooden Wall Half to the top of the walls. If you want big windows, don’t do it, if you want small windows, do what I do.

Finally, don’t add the wooden door, but choose the slightly more expensive wooden door. It is more aesthetically pleasing and practical to enter your home.

Furniture

First go to the workbench, build yourself a bed (a spawning point in case you die), place a chest in front of the bed for storage and put a flashlight in it.

You can also place another crate on a shelf above the first crate with two 1×1 wooden planks.

Roof

The roof closes the building and turns it into a canopy for better recreation. The roof over the workbench provides additional opportunities for craft production.

It is up to you to use a 26-degree Tatch roof or a 45-degree Tatch roof. Personally, I chose 45 degrees to give me a little more freedom. For a larger building, it would make sense to raise the roof 26 degrees so it is not too high.

As a general rule, the roof should be placed so that it covers as little space as possible, as shown in the screenshot above. I decided to finish the roof with a cross on the wooden roof and wooden beams at an angle of 45 degrees. Totally optional, but it sounds great!

Crushing

Now you should have a fully functioning shelter with a fire that won’t go out even if it rains, no smoke filling your house, and it won’t be too big so you won’t have to spend too much time growing a ton of wood.

But you can visually enhance the shelter by adding a few beams where it makes sense and is visually appealing and gives the building a little more structural integrity. Not that it’s necessary. The integrity of the structure can be recognized by the color of the connected parts. Note that green = good, while red = to break.

Go to your workbench and get a whore! It’s man’s best friend, and you can use it to eradicate weeds around your home.

Bonus tips:

Install two cooking stations near the fire. Can cook meat in half the time. Well, if you could put your box next to the fire to contain the food, it would be safe. Now that you are a building professional, you can easily expand your home when the time comes.
