The full text of Ad 343 is below: Here at 343 Industries, our teams are fully focused on the future of Halo. Whether it’s major updates and improvements for MCC, the transition to PC, or the future of the Halo Infinite franchise, we’re working hard to create a great experience for years to come. The future looks bright for Halo fans, and we’re very excited about the possibilities. Today we are combining future work and priorities with ongoing maintenance of the old Halo for Xbox 360 services. Maintaining these old services now requires a lot of time and resources, which has a direct impact on the studio’s ability to support current and future projects like Halo: The Master Chief Collection and Halo Infinite. Meanwhile, monthly usage of these older Xbox 360 gaming services continues to decline, creating an even greater mismatch between the time and effort spent on maintenance and the net effect on the Halo community as a whole. That doesn’t mean we don’t care about everyone who plays Halo – we certainly do. But as in any business, our teams must constantly weigh needs against available resources (time, staff, expertise, etc.) and prioritize the areas and opportunities that will have the greatest impact. As these games age and better modern replacements for many of them come on the market, fewer and fewer people are spending time on the original traditional games. Digital sales have slowed considerably, and physical sales of these older Xbox 360 games have already stopped in 2018. Every cycle spent maintaining and supporting the old Xbox 360 services is time and energy not spent on the future of Halo. That’s why today we’re announcing that we’re discontinuing our Halo Xbox 360 Legacy services, so we can focus entirely on the future of the franchise. In about ONE YEAR, in December 2021, the online services for the old Halo Xbox 360 games will be removed. Owners of these games may continue to play them indefinitely, but certain online features and functions, including online matchmaking, will be restricted or disabled. We deliberately take a slow and deliberate approach, with a tiered approach to ensure that our players get a head start: Phase One – Fall 2019 One-time migration of over 6 million units of legacy UGC user data from Halo Xbox 360 to Halo : The Master Chief Collection Phase 2 – December 2020 (WE HERE) First Player Notification Digital sales of Halo Xbox 360 games will be discontinued *Halo Xbox 360 DLC will still be available for free Phase Three – 2021 Continuous messages and reminders throughout the year via the Halo channels. Phase 4 – December 2021 *(TBD, no earlier than one year from today’s blog date) Closure of old Halo Xbox 360 services. The continued growth and expansion of MCC and the realization of our ambitious vision for Halo Infinite is our highest priority. The task of daily maintenance and the challenges associated with these aging services allow the team to focus on our most important future projects. As mentioned, this is just the beginning – and we will continue to send out messages in the coming months to remind our community of next year’s closure. No further action is required at this time, except take note. We would also like to point out that due to the obsolescence of these services and internal work, interruptions may occur from time to time. If we expect that the work will lead to interruptions of the service, we will inform you of this. Below you will find more information and answers to a number of frequently asked questions. We greatly appreciate our community’s long-standing support for these Xbox 360 games and look forward to a new chapter in our partnership with the development of MCC and the transition to Halo Infinite in 2021.
