Where did the Rocket League Phenomenon Come From?

Rocket League is a unique soccer-related video game that was released in 2015 by Psyonix. The game has been an absolute success for the developer, but you might know about the complete history behind this project. The History of the Rocket League is quite compelling, and in this article, we will tell you how this phenomenon took place.

How Psyonix Started

Psyonix was developed in 2000, and at first, it just modified and created additional content for existing games. After a while, the studio started developing its own game and eventually created one of the most loved games, Rocket League. In 2015 the Rocket League went live, and despite being simple, it became the talk of that time.

It has been more than eight years since the game was released, and it is still played by many fans worldwide. However, what surprised us was that Rocket League is a sequel. You might have heard about the Supersonic Acrobatic Rocket-Powered Battle-Cars. Rocket League is a sequel to this game, or you can also consider them almost identical to each other.

The prequel to Rocket League was a PS3 exclusive, and over 3 million players downloaded it. Rocket League is basically a refined version of Battle-Cars, but the game wasn’t like Rocket League from the start. It has a very different start. Thomas Silloway stated it like this:

“We knew the other game we were making was pretty fun, but it turned out that when we threw the ball in there, it became ten times better.”

Rocket League wouldn’t have existed, or it wouldn’t have been what it is today if the team didn’t have a change of mind. The core of Rocket League is arguably soccer (football), as many on the team were sports fans. Silloway states that even if you are not a fan of football, even if you don’t like sports, you will have fun playing this game.

After the release and success of the game, he said:

“I think the biggest reason it’s been successful is just because it’s a great game, we put all of our efforts into this game over the last three years, fully focused on it with our small team. Even before that, we’ve been thinking about the game since the prequel.”

To this date, almost 100 million players have played Rocket League which just explains how much successful it was. It was revealed by 2020 that the game had made around $360 Million in revenue, which is insane considering it is a free-to-play game.

The studio behind Rocket League did face some failures in the past, but it has taken pride in Rocket League. The game is even played as Esports, where players compete with each other for massive pool prizes.

Despite being a game almost a decade years old, Rocket League is still relevant thanks to the Esports tournament and the collaborations it gets. Rocket League has collaborated with Batman, Star Wars, Stranger Things, Fortnie, Superman, Rick and Morty, The Fast and Furious, Game of Thrones, Harry Potter, and many other famous franchises. So, if you are interested, you can buy Rocket League items as they have many collabs you might love some of them.
