Storm Ground is the latest (and final) expansion for the Warhammer 40k-themed board game, Storm of Sigmar. It’s an interesting expansion, as it breaks the mold of most Storm of Sigmar expansions by introducing a whole new army-the Stormcast Eternals.
Age of Sigmar has come a long way. When Games Workshop replaced Warhammer Fantasy with a new framework, fans were very unhappy. It was called a copy of 40K, a boring attempt to turn fantasy into something authoritative, a boring new setting with no story, and it seemed doomed to fail. And now, years later, the first full-fledged board game appears along with the third edition of the board game. And while I’m sure GW’s decision to bring back Fantasy certainly helped, I can’t deny that AoS has earned success on its own merits. They worked on creating the setting and factions, created workable rules (that even influenced 40K) and just made the game fun and interesting. So when it comes to Warhammer Age of Sigmar : Sturmgrund, as someone who hates Age of Sigmar, I was actually pretty excited.
As everyone already knows, Warhammer has a rather poor track record when it comes to games. This is especially true for 40K games, while Fantasy seems to be doing better. In the realm of fantasy, the Total War stage emerges: Warhammer, and 40K is Necromunda: An assassin. So the biggest question for me was where Age of Sigmar’s long journey would begin. Fortunately, despite some problems, I found that she tended toward the first option. It’s not a perfect game, it has a few odd decisions, but overall I really liked it. This is the kind of game that warrants the free use of the Games Workshop license. Sure, there are sometimes questionable games, but you can also find inventive games that are a lot of fun.
To be honest, it’s pretty hard to describe the content of this Warhammer Age of Sigmar game: Land of storms. The simplest thing I can think of is that it’s basically X-Com (the classic, not the Firaxis games) in Iron Man mode. All the time. It is a hex-based strategy with strong mechanisms for collecting and developing units. It also has a strong roguelike element, meaning that if you lose a battle, you lose a war. And I mean specifically Roguelike, not Lite. You can take some things with you to the new start, but overall you will have to start from scratch. If this sounds harsh for the default mode, you are absolutely right. There’s a reason Iron Man is usually optional, but for Gasket games it’s a bold move. Now literally every fight counts, because if you lose, you go back to the beginning of the current campaign.
This brings me to the campaigns available for Storm Ground. There are three factions to play for, and each faction has three campaigns of increasing difficulty. There are the Eternal Stormcasters, warriors of light and order. And then there’s the night hunting – the evil and scary dead. Finally, there are the Maggotkin of Nurgle, who are as bad as they look. I was surprised by the number of units available for each faction and the variety of play styles. They took a lot of inspiration from the board game in terms of customization, army composition and general tactics, and that’s a good thing. If you already have a set of rules for your turn game, use them. All of this is reflected in the multiplayer that the game actually has. Although the small number of players means you can only play against artificial intelligence, it’s still great fun to try out new tactics and compositions.
A few things I noticed while working on the game. The variety of maps isn’t huge, but that was never a problem, nor was the variety of spawns and units. The animations and unit effects were just phenomenal, you don’t just put your Stormcast Eternals on the field, they strike the board like lightning. At any given time, you can only have one active campaign for all factions. This is probably my biggest problem with the game, to be honest. The multiplayer mode also comes with an army designer, which in my opinion should be present in all Warhammer games. Yeah, I’m looking at you, Total Warhammer.
So much for Warhammer Age of Sigmar: Storm drain. It’s a very solid and fun game that I will definitely be playing for a while. I love the look of the game, the play styles of the chosen factions, and the nature of the roguelikes keeps me coming back. I’m also slowly starting to delve into the Age of Sigmar setting, and this game is a good introduction. I also can’t get over how easy it would be to add DLC for the factions, so I really hope the game sells well enough to buy it. Games like this thrive on new toys, and Age of Sigmar has many. However, I hope that a game like this will serve as a reference for future games in this context. More solidity and fun, less weakness and accidents, please.
|This is very good. Especially the device models and animations are fantastically designed.||This is a well-made strategy game with plenty of gameplay options, both for developing and customizing units and during the battle itself.|
|The dubbing actors are vulgar but funny. The soundtrack is so forgettable that it doesn’t even play in the background.||While the overall nature of Roguelike can be rough, I can’t deny that the gameplay loop keeps me coming back for more than just a sequel.|
|Final decision: 8.0|
