Back in 2005, Battlefield 2 did something that many game developers and publishers have since emulated: they allowed the public to test out their upcoming games before they were released to the public. Battlefield 2’s beta test offered the opportunity to play the game for free on a PC, but the Xbox 360 version was only given to those who pre-ordered the game.
From the perspective of a technical gameplay tester, Battlefield 2042 runs much smoother on console than on PC. Playing on a PlayStation 4, I noticed the game’s physics had a smoothness and naturalness to it that I didn’t feel on the PC. This makes sense; console hardware is inferior to the PC, so it makes sense that the game runs better on consoles.
In a recent article, Brian Crecente of Kotaku reported that an unnamed source within DICE said that the technical playtest that was conducted with Battlefield 2042, the sequel to the classic Battlefield 1942, on Xbox One devkits was “much smoother” than the playtest on PC. According to the source, the Xbox One devkits ran the game “much smoother” than the PC version. This may suggest that Battlefield 2042 may come out on Xbox One first (though it’s not clear if the source meant that the Xbox One version of the game would be released first, or that it was running on devkits at the time).. The technical playtest for Battlefield 2042 is now underway, however it seems that the multiplayer-only shooter is running poorly on the platform that is often best for this kind of game.
Battlefield 2042 testers are claiming that the Xbox version of the game is operating “far smoother” than the PC version, as reported by Battlefield 2042 leaker Tom Henderson.
While this is just a technical preview, it’s strange that DICE hasn’t found out how to optimize the game for more powerful setups. The lack of uniformity is especially troubling since Battlefield 2042’s playtest doesn’t look all that great and seems to be operating at low graphics settings.
Because no one with a PlayStation 5 may participate in the Battlefield 2042 technical playtest, it’s unknown how it compares to the Xbox and PC versions. There was a “serious problem” that prohibited PS5 players from participating in the test, according to EA Studios’ senior community manager Adam “PartWelsh” Freeman. If it hasn’t been addressed already, it should be shortly.
On October 22nd, Battlefield 2042 will be released globally on Xbox One, PlayStation 4, and PC (Origin, Steam,Epic Games Store). Regardless of today’s claims, the PC version will undoubtedly outperform the console due to features like NVIDIA DLSS and NVIDIA Reflex.

There’s a big problem with Battlefield 4, and it all has to do with how it runs on PC. It’s not a bug, it’s a feature. A new technical test for Battlefield 4 on PC shows that the game runs far more smoothly on Xbox 360 and Xbox One, and is much more stable than on computers. This is a shocking revelation, and should be a big wakeup call for developers to re-examine the PC version of their games, and to make sure they’re not crippling them with inferior graphical settings on PC. It’s not just the latest Call of Duty that’s a mess–it’s all of them.. Read more about ea playtest and let us know what you think.
