Theme Park Mask Policies: What You Need to Know

Theme park employees are often required to wear a mask to protect them against exposure to respiratory illnesses, but there is no uniform policy for how they are worn. That is why the managers of such parks usually ask theme park employees to fill out a form requesting two options: a plastic one that is not too tight and one that is not too loose. Unfortunately, these two options have turned out to be quite different from one park to another.

Last week, we wrote about a MMSC park that was allowing minors (those under the age of 16) to enter with face masks that covered the mouth. This was seen as a good idea, since it helps to keep the park clean, but the concept of face-covering masks has some people concerned that the concept could be abused.

Way back in the day, when we were young, we got to play all sorts of games. We played hide and go seek, tag, red rover, and all kinds of other fun games. But wait, there’s more! We got to play games that were based on our favorite movies. Now if we were really lucky, we might get to play games based on our favorite books. However, I have a feeling that no matter how much we want to play games based on our favorite books, we will never get to play them. Let’s just say that that is how life is.

Although many establishments in the US are 100% open, social distancing rules have been abolished, etc., the rules for masking are now more confusing than ever. I will make it easy for you and give you a list of what the major theme parks are doing in terms of masks. *NOTE: These policies are constantly evolving, sometimes on a daily basis. Be sure to check the park’s website for updates before your trip! This is what we have so far: Universal Orlando: Trust the honor system. Vaccinated persons are no longer required to wear a mask indoors or out, but proof of vaccination is not required. On their website: In accordance with CDC recommendations, it is no longer necessary to cover the faces of fully vaccinated indoor and outdoor guests. Although we do not require proof of vaccination, we ask that those who are not fully vaccinated wear a protective mask indoors. We encourage all guests to maintain a safe distance between travelers and remain focused on maintaining the highest standards of cleanliness and hygiene. Disneyland: Take your mask. On their website: All guests (2 years and older) and companions, including those who have received the COVID-19 vaccine, must cover their faces. Disneyland: It’s a little more complicated than that, but in short: Masks must be worn on all forms of transportation (monorail, bus, skyliner, etc.), indoors, in attractions and in line for attractions. You can take your mask off when you walk out and that’s it. On their website: All guests (2 years and older) and service personnel must cover their faces. Wear protective masks and wear them in all confined spaces, except when actively eating or drinking, while standing and maintaining proper body distance. It is not necessary to cover your face in public areas of Walt Disney World Resort, but it is mandatory at the entrance and in all attractions, indoor theaters and vehicles. Sea World Orlando and San Antonio: Like Universal Orlando; honor system. Masks are not required for vaccinated individuals, but proof of vaccination is also not required. On their website: Face masks are no longer required for guests and ambassadors who are fully vaccinated according to CDC guidelines. We will not require proof of vaccination from our customers, but do ask that everyone adhere to our revised policy. Universal Hollywood: Take your mask. On their website: Everyone is required to wear protective clothing during the visit. It’s that simple. Six Flags Magic Mountain (California) and Six Flags Over Texas: Take your mask. On their website: Masks are mandatory for all guests and team members during their stay in the park. If you cannot wear a mask (N95, surgical or cloth), you can wear an acrylic mask in the park. OPINION: DO NOT wear acrylic face shields during ALL rides. Rides may only be ridden by masked guests. Cedar Point: This paragraph is a bit controversial, but basically it says you don’t need a mask if you’re vaccinated. If you have not been vaccinated, cover yourself with a mask when indoors. However, you do not need proof of vaccination. On their website: All guests 10 years of age and older who have not been fully vaccinated must wear a mouth guard indoors, except when actively eating and drinking. Guests who are not fully vaccinated are asked, but not required, to cover their faces. Hershey Park: The honor system. Masks are mandatory for those not vaccinated, but they don’t seem to require proof. On their website: Face shields and social distancing for guests who are fully vaccinated will no longer be required as of the effective date. Of course, all vaccinated people can continue to wear a closed face if they wish. All visitors two years of age and older who have not been fully vaccinated must wear a mask during their visit, except when eating or drinking. We count on our guests to carefully follow the recommendations according to their vaccination status. King’s Dominion: The honor system. Masks are mandatory for those not vaccinated, but they don’t seem to require proof. On their website: Face shield for any guest 2 years of age or older who has not been fully vaccinated. All guests 2 years of age and older who have not been fully vaccinated must wear a protective mask indoors unless eating or drinking. In fully vaccinated individuals, covering the face is recommended, but not required. Busch Gardens Tampa and Virginia: The honor system. On their website: Face masks are no longer required for guests and ambassadors who are fully vaccinated according to CDC guidelines. We will not require proof of vaccination from our customers, but do ask that everyone adhere to our revised policy. Here we go!
