Sniper: Ghost Warrior Contracts 2 is the second game in the Ghost Warrior series of first-person shooters. The original game was developed by City Interactive and released on January 31, 2012. A trailer for the sequel was shown at the Electronic Entertainment Expo in June of the same year. In this sequel, the player assumes the role of Russian sniper Sergei Zimina, who is sent behind enemy lines to assassinate a key leader of a group of terrorists. The main goal of the game is to eliminate the terrorist leader.
Several years ago, I was a huge fan of the first Sniper: Ghost Warrior game, so I was pretty excited for the sequel, which is called Sniper: Ghost Warrior Contracts 2. Sadly, the single player game is pretty boring. The story is okay, but is the kind of straightforward and cliché that I’m used to seeing in a lot of FPS games. It’s not bad, but simple and boring. If you go into the game expecting a story, you may be disappointed.
It’s no secret that I love a good stealth game. Given the choice, I always opt for a long-range, camouflaged killer. The fact that I can move stealthily across the map is an exciting and strange mystery to me. My friends laugh at me because I play Dishonored in stealth, without killing or using abilities. People say it’s a race without fun, but for me it’s a rewarding and intense planning to come out of the shadows. I get the same satisfaction from games like Hitman, where cleverly planned kills are rewarded. Sniper: Ghost Warrior Contracts 2 feels like a combination of Hitman and Far Cry, and I love it.
Sniper: Ghost Warrior Contracts 2 has a fairly simple plot, and thankfully it doesn’t beat you over the head with it. You play as Raven, a sniper hired to complete a series of missions in the Middle East. The game is set on the border between Lebanon and Syria, where you must stop the crime syndicate by shooting the brains of its leaders into tiny pieces. That’s the whole point, because the film never tries to be anything other than what it is, and that’s fine by me. Give me some good cards, some targets, and let me do the rest.

There are two different types of mission structures, and a specific workload is appropriate for each. Each mission has its own map and set of objectives and tasks. Depending on the type of mission, the maps are very well structured and adapt to the gameplay. Long Shot Contracts is a fairly linear map where you move around various sniper points to kill enemies from a distance. To reach the sniper posts, you must pass through several enemy outposts. This means you must be prepared to travel long distances and face certain CQC authorities. Classic missions land you on an open map with a series of targets that you can destroy in any order. These maps require a more traditional stealth game, with more hiding in the bushes and hand-to-hand combat. You’re not going to shoot for more than 1,000 yards here.
The variety of mission structures gives you the chance to try out all the possible game options. Classic contracts naturally give you more freedom to choose how you want to play. Since the map in these missions is more of a sandbox, you can go all out with shotguns, grenades and C4. Or become a shadow in the bushes and attack silently with CQCs, bows or throwing knives. There’s no shortage of options here. However, there will be tasks for which you get extra money to complete, requiring you to play in a certain way. You won’t be able to complete all the challenges at once, so choose the ones that suit your play style. For example, there is a command to shoot grenades at the belts of enemies, but if you do, you probably won’t get the command because there are no warnings.
Just like in the Hitman game, you have to complete different tasks for each objective. This greatly increases replay value and encourages different play styles.
Long Shot Contracts is where I think Sniper: Ghost Warrior Contracts 2 shines and stands out from other stealth games. These missions involve extremely long sniper shots that require special equipment and ammunition. These maps are more linear, but you must fight through enemy checkpoints to reach the sniper point. You can even run from enemies if you want. Once you step into the sniper’s shoes, the game changes dramatically. You no longer go from shadow to shadow, you scan, observe and plan. It is important to mark enemies, observe their behavior, and find objects that can be used as distractions to isolate a soldier. As in Hitman, it is possible to destroy targets using the environment. These methods look like accidents and will not raise an alarm.
The cards are designed so that you can destroy an entire base without being warned. This is usually due to distraction or the use of special ammunition. Armor-piercing bullets are ideal for hitting targets behind a thin metal or wooden barrier. The decoy projectiles give you a signal that makes the guard explore and you can take him out. EMP bullets disable vehicles, cameras and all electronic devices in the affected area. Agile ammunition has no wind or bullet cushioning and fires exactly where your sights are. The cartridges of nails and explosives speak for themselves.
Consult with captains to mark important targets on the map. By interrogating the soldiers, you will discover the enemies in the area.
I’m obsessed with making perfect contracts without warning, because I love finding any way to destroy my opponents without being noticed. This is no easy task, as you have to keep an eye on all the enemies and their position lines. In addition, overall accuracy plays a major role, as falling bullets and wind must be taken into account. As soon as you see an enemy, you know how far away he is, so you can aim properly.
The use of notches on the visor allows for precise positioning. If the enemy is at 1282 yards, you can set the reticle to 1300 and measure the distance with serifs. The wind speed and direction must then be taken into account, and the notches in the reticle again depend on the wind speed. In simpler situations, a small dot will show you where your ball will land if you find it too heavy.
Destroy the target and then bring a friendly prisoner to safety. All this at more than 1000 meters distance, don’t miss it!
Completing missions and quests earns you perk points and money that you can spend on upgrades and weapons. You can choose from four development paths: Mask and recon, support and stealth, drone and turret, and gear and gadgets. Each of these has three upgrade paths, some of which branch out to better suit your play style. With money you can buy new weapons, gadgets and useful items. Unlocking a new heavy long-range sniper with an ultra-long-range visor will make a big difference on your next long-range mission. Unlocking the bow and drone can make tracking and sniping much easier.
However, the game is not perfect. There are no bugs or glitches in the game, and it runs very well, but there are some issues with the AI and design. The level design is generally well done and offers several varied locations. Deserts, forests and artificial bunkers. The problem with the design is that none of them are really interesting. Everything feels very familiar, which can lead to some game fatigue. It is well designed in terms of gameplay, but it was not fun to explore. This may also be due to the fact that the gameplay is rather formal outside of long-range sniping. It’s not bad at all, but it looks like every other stealth action game.

The artificial intelligence is also a bit cheesy and doesn’t know when it wants to be cool or stupid. In long contracts you can be more than 1300 meters away from your opponent, but if you warn him, he will automatically move to your position and can strike. In classic missions, you can drop an enemy within five feet of his size without him noticing. I’m sure it’s hard to program an AI to be a threat at over 1300 meters, but there has to be something better than a soldier shooting a rusty AK-47 and hitting me.
Visual sniper: Ghost Warrior Contracts 2 is okay, it won’t blow you away, but there are some good details here. The weapon and character models are well done, but the gore effects are clunky and disgusting. When slow motion is on, there is a lot of detail when you pop someone’s head off like an M-80 into a watermelon. What disappointed me the most were the visuals – that’s the environment. It’s not that they’re poorly detailed, they’re just not fun to navigate.
The time interval never gets old. However, you can limit the frequency if you don’t want to.
The sound design is pretty simple, nothing special stands out. The soundtrack is very sparse, but it is quiet during the game. The various sound effects, on the other hand, are well rendered. Sniper fire, explosions, tanks, talking enemies, and different stages depending on your gender. There is nothing in the sound design that stands out for me, other than the delayed effects of the gelatinized blood. The rush of blood as the head explodes is a sadistic pleasure.
Sniper: Ghost Warrior Contracts 2 is a game made for my taste. It gives me a wide range of gameplay, tech, stealth and shooting options, which I really like. It combines stealth and long-range sniper simulation very well, and while it’s not very exciting, it gives methodical players like me something to keep me busy. Five maps, twenty-one missions, and countless quests and ransomware missions – there are a lot of them in the game.
The images aren’t bad, but nothing caught my eye or excited me.
