Review – Myst (VR) –

Myst is a game that was released in 1993. It has been remade for VR, and I got to play it at Oculus Connect 3.

Myst (VR) is a game that allows players to explore and solve puzzles in a world full of mystery. The game received positive reviews from critics and players alike. Read more in detail here: myst vr guide.

Cyan Worlds’ Myst was one of the first puzzle games that completely captivated me. I’ve played it many times, even when realMyst: Masterpiece Edition was released on Switch and PC last year. I felt it was the greatest version of the game we’d ever seen at the time, particularly considering it was nearly three decades old. Yet, almost a year after the release of realMyst: Masterpiece Edition, we now have a brand-new completely updated VR version. Never one to pass up an opportunity to play Myst, I excitedly downloaded the newest edition. I realized right away that this was the way the game was supposed to be played.

Myst’s islands have never looked more lifelike.

I find it amusing (and a bit humiliating) that I was completely unprepared for this. I had the opportunity of meeting Rand Miller, the co-creator of Myst, earlier this year, and one of the topics I asked was if he would ever go into other gaming gear, such as virtual reality. “Absolutely,” he said. I can’t think of a more pleasant way to be immersed in another universe than virtual reality.” So it’s beyond me how I didn’t see Myst in VR coming.

For those unfamiliar with Myst, here’s a quick summary: when you pick up a weird book, a crack in the earth opens, and both you and the book fall through it. You wake up on a strange island with little knowledge about who you are or what you’re supposed to do. Exploration and puzzle solving are central to Myst, even though your efforts often result in more questions than solutions. If you explore all the islands have to offer, though, you’ll be rewarded with a disturbing look into what happened on each island before to your arrival.

Sirrus and Achenar, two brothers who are trapped in blue and red books, will beg for your assistance in escaping their literary prisons.

The narrative hasn’t altered much from the original 1993 game, but it’s still there. If you’ve ever played Myst, you’ll know precisely what to expect. There is an option to create the puzzles randomly, which does provide some variety, but if you already know how to solve them, this feature won’t help you much. At the end of the day, this is still the same Myst we had previously.

That isn’t always a negative thing, particularly given how fantastic the game is on its own. There’s a reason Myst maintains such a devoted following almost three decades after its original release. It is credited with inventing the exploration-based puzzle genre. It provides very little guidance and never holds your hand during your trip. This was intriguing enough on a normal PC or console, but this new foray into virtual reality was a stroke of brilliance.

You may visit Myst at various eras by discovering different books, such as this mechanical Age shown above.

I can confidently state that this is, without a doubt, the greatest method to experience Myst. In VR, Myst seems perfectly at home. Because this is a first-person exploration game, you’ll be immediately captivated by this Mysterious universe (see what I did there?). In VR, the degree of immersion is astounding.

You have two options on how to navigate about. You may move in increments, much as in the original game, where you click on the ground to travel where you want. Personally, I’ve never been a fan of moving in this manner since it seems stilted. The second approach is to go into settings and choose the option for free movement. This is unquestionably the greatest option, since it adds to the game’s overall immersion.

Consider how much more spectacular the water surrounding the Clock Tower seems.

While the game itself is the same Myst we all know and love, the original and even the realMyst versions have received some new enhancements. All of the visuals have been improved, making this version of Myst the most visually appealing ever. The change in visual quality was instantly apparent to me, as a glimpse at the ocean to my right caused my mouth to drop at how realistic the waves seemed. In fact, I was so taken aback by the sheer scale and breadth of everything that my jaw struck the floor many times. I had the distinct impression that I was on those islands. Everything, even the texturing, has been improved aesthetically. The wood has realistic-looking grains, the stones have texture and shine, and the foliage on the trees aren’t cardboard cutouts anymore.

Even if the library’s volumes have been destroyed, its beauty cannot be denied.

Review – Myst (VR) –

Apart from the few individuals in the game, almost everything in this version of Myst seems fairly genuine. This is my only major criticism of this version: the people you’ll meet now seem to be clearly computer generated. To be honest, I’m not sure why that element was altered. The three individuals you interact with in the original and realMyst versions are all live action. Despite the fact that this was done owing to financial limitations at the time (the individuals were portrayed by the Miller brothers, who also co-created the game), the live action portrayals looked fantastic even thirty years ago. They would have looked much better in this form, particularly given how accurate everything else appears.

After so many years of watching the characters in live action, the computer generated versions seem startling.

The sound design has been improved as well. The ambient noises of nature around you are far more apparent than the faint sounds of waves and wind. This adds to the immersion, and I often found myself just taking in the sights and sounds of the environment around me. It’s even more important since so many of Myst’s riddles are solved by listening to the right aural cues. Things are lot clearer now, and you can identify the difference between noises and the direction they’re coming from much easier.

Myst has always been a favorite of mine. I was already a fan of realMyst when it was launched last year, but seeing it in virtual reality is an altogether other experience. It has a better appearance, a crisper sound, and a smoother playback. If you haven’t played Myst before, you should do so immediately. If you’ve played Myst before, you should try it in virtual reality to get a fresh perspective on it.

The visuals have been completely redone, with much better textures and lighting effects. In virtual reality, the contrast is particularly apparent. You may choose to go about frame by frame, like in the original, or fluidly, which significantly improves the experience. In virtual reality, pressing buttons and picking up things is considerably simpler.
The sound design has been completely overhauled and is really great. Hearing the waves smash, the trees rustle, and the birds sing all around you just adds to the feeling of being completely immersed. Myst surprised me with how effectively it worked in a virtual reality environment. This is by far the most effective method of playing the game.
Final Score: 9.0

Myst is now available on PC with Oculus Rift, Valve Index, and HTC Vive compatibility.

With an i7-9700k, RTX 2070, and 16GB RAM, it was tested on an Oculus Rift.

The publisher gave a copy of Myst to me.
