As someone who has been in the gaming industry since the early 1990s, I can confidently state that Sonic the Hedgehog’s 3D period has been a bit of a… mixed bag. Don’t get me wrong: I like Sonic Adventure and Sonic Adventure 2 (despite the fact that they haven’t aged very well), but every game after that has been a bit of a toss-up, to put it nicely. We had games like Sonic Generations that were really quite good, and then we got games like Sonic Unleashed or Shadow the Hedgehog, and the less said about that period of gaming, the better. 

However, there was one recent 3D Sonic game, Sonic Colors, that, although not universally adored, nonetheless holds a respectable place on the totem pole. Sonic Colors’ greater focus on pure speed-based platforming seemed like a return to form for the blue hedgehog when it was first launched on the Nintendo Wii. There were less gimmicks, Sonic’s pals got in the way less, and Shadow didn’t yell “damn” every five minutes.

The only major flaw with the game was that it was released on the Wii, which meant that it came with annoying Wiimote waggle controls. It would potentially be an enormously better game if those controls could be eliminated. Sega, thankfully, does listen to our cries from time to time, as shown by the fact that Sonic Colors: Ultimate will be released later this month. Is Sonic Colors: Ultimate a Remake of the Original?

Sonic Colors: Ultimate is a remaster, not a remake, if you want to be technical. Remember, there is a distinction. It’s essentially the same game; the narrative, language, and overall gameplay loop are all the same. Parts of the game that may have been held back by outmoded design sensibilities, on the other hand, have been given a thorough overhaul. For example, the visuals have been entirely rerendered in Unreal Engine 4 to give them a more contemporary look. Depending on the platform you play it on, it may even be able to run in 4K resolution, but we’ll get to that later. If you’re into cosmetics, Sonic will have numerous skins and costumes to choose from, including those based on the upcoming Sonic the Hedgehog movie in 2020.

The gameplay has also been revamped; although Ultimate is based on the Wii version of the game, the waggle controls have been abandoned in favor of plain ol’ button inputs. The Jade Ghost Wisp, which was brought over from Team Sonic Racing and allows Sonic to phase through barriers and discover shortcuts, is one of the new features. Aside from the main storyline, there’s a new Rival Rush option in which you may race against Metal Sonic at extreme speeds. Local multiplayer is also available, exactly as in the original game, allowing two players to go through the levels together. Unfortunately, this feature is only available offline, and although the original game had internet leaderboards for submitting your times, Sega has not said whether or not they will be returning.

The music has also been reworked and enhanced for the game. The original music was OK, but hey, if you’re going to remaster everything else, you may as well do it all. Kate Higgins, who voiced Tails, was invited back to retake a couple of his lines of speech, but Roger Craig Smith’s original performance as Sonic will be preserved. Fun fact: After his previous English voice actor, Jason Griffith, stepped down, he became Sonic’s voice actor for the first time in Sonic Colors, and he’s been Sonic’s voice actor ever since.

When is Sonic Colors: Ultimate going to be released?

Let’s get down to business now. Sonic Colors: Ultimate will be available on the Epic Games shop on September 7th, 2021 for Nintendo Switch, Xbox One, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5 (through backwards compatibility), Xbox Series X/S, and PC. You’re out of luck if you were hoping for a Steam release. Perhaps next year. To respond to a prior remark, the game will support 4K graphics on PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC.

Pre-order & Early Access for Sonic Colors

You have a couple choices for pre-ordering if you’re interested. The game, a set of player icons, and some unique lightning cosmetics for Sonic’s boost ability based on the 2020 movie are all included in the regular digital edition, which costs $39.99. All of that, plus a three-pack of remixed music tracks, a set of gold and silver cosmetic items for Sonic, some additional player symbols based on the movie, and, most importantly, early access to the game before its official release, is included in the $44.99 digital deluxe version. If you obtain early access, you’ll be able to play the game during the following hours beginning September 3rd:

If you prefer physical copies, pre-orders for Xbox One, PlayStation 4, and Nintendo Switch copies are available for $39.99 at most major stores. While the physical version does not include all of the digital bonuses, it does include a cute baby Sonic keychain based on the film (while supplies last). For our friends over the pond, physical copies in the EU-region have been delayed indefinitely due to the epidemic, so you may want to stick with digital copies.
