So far, 2021 has been a sparse year for video games, particularly fighting games. Sure, we’ve got Guilty Gear Strike and Virtua Fighter 5: Ultimate Showdown, but more 2021 fighting games will be entering the battle in the coming months. Here’s a list of five intriguing games, spanning from anime to boxing, wrestling, and even racing. Let’s get this party started.

Drive With Your Head Up!

What happens when racing and fighting games are combined? It’s time to buckle up and drive. This indie game, which will be released on August 21 for PC platforms, is both a drifting racing and a fighting game, with two different modes to select from. While the idea is basic, both vehicles battle in a vertical arena as they speed down the highway. You may fire projectiles, drift towards your opponent for damage, and even Ryu-style dragon punch your foes. You may even leap into the air and stomp on your opponent. We don’t anticipate this to appear at EVO anytime soon (save for side events), but it seems like a lot of fun. It will initially be available on itch.io, with a Steam release following later.

Creed Champions vs. Big Rumble Boxing

The creator of the popular VR game Creed: Rise To Glory is back with a more conventional take on the boxing series. This game, which will be released on September 3, will include a cast of 20 characters from the Creed and Rocky film franchises. Rocky Balboa, Adonis Creed, Apollo Creed, Clubber Lang, and Ivan Drago, to mention a few, will all be included. Big Rumble Boxing: Creed Champions seems to be aiming for an arcade experience similar to Ready 2 Rumble rather than EA’s simulation-focused Fight Night series. The game will include “intuitive, pick-up-and-play controls, comprehensive boxing mechanics, and dynamic boxing styles and combos,” according to the developer Virtuos. There will also be cinematic knockouts tailored to each fighter’s individual techniques. On the PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S, Nintendo Switch, and PC, Big Rumble Boxing: Creed Champions will be released.

Type Lumina Melty Blood

Do you have a hankering for an old-school 2D fighting game? When Melty Blood: Type Lumina claws its way into digital shops on September 30, it may be able to help you out. This game is essentially a reinvented version of the 2002 PC game, with a gaming structure that is simpler to play for newcomers to the genre. Fans of the original will appreciate this game since it retains the original’s complex gameplay. Upgraded graphics and HD surroundings will also be added to the game, making it more compatible with PS4 (PS5 via backward compatibility), Xbox One (Xbox Series X/S through backward compatibility), Nintendo Switch, and PC.

The Hinokami Chronicles – Demon Slayer – October 15

On October 15, Demon Slayer: Hinokami Chronicles will thrill anime lovers. This fighting game, like many others in its anime subgenre, will be an arena fighter. Despite its bad reputation in the community, Demon Slayer: The Hinokami Chronicles seems to be shaking things up with a fast-paced combat system and beautiful anime-style animation.

It’s no surprise that CyberConnect2, the creators of the popular Naruto: Ultimate Ninja Storm series, decided to take on this project. The game will include a narrative mode that takes players through the Tanjiro Kamado: Unwavering Resolve Arc and the current Mugen Train Arc, as anticipated from CC2. What’s more, both the Japanese and English voice casts will reprise their roles in the game. When the game launches on the PS5, PS4, Xbox Series X/S, Xbox One, and PC, you’ll be cutting your rivals (via Steam). If you preorder the Digital Deluxe Edition, you’ll get two days early access.

WWE 2K22

This year, the WWE series will finally return to a mainstream title, and we’re anticipating an October release, like with previous championships. WWE 2K20 was a complete disaster, with many bugs throughout. Because the game’s development was hurried, it was essentially unplayable. Worse, the project was handed over to a different developer months before the game was published. WWE 2K22 is expected to be much better now that Digital Extremes has been given more time to work on it.

At the time of writing, we know that the upcoming title will have over 4,800 new or updated animations, upgrading the superstar lineup’s entrances and actions. It will be fascinating to see which wrestlers make the final roster after major names like Braun Strowman and Bray Wyatt were released from the WWE. With its regular employment cutbacks, it’s difficult to predict what the McMahon family will do next.

As far as Super Smash Bros. is concerned, Ultimate is about to embark on its last DLC character, and Nickelodeon All-Star Brawl seems to be capitalizing on the platform fighter craze this autumn. All-Star Brawl, developed by the same team behind the well-received Slap City Ludosity, features Nickelodeon characters from all periods. In this surprisingly slick-looking combatant, you’ll witness Sandy bashing up on the likes of Danny Phantom and Nigel Thornberry.

Nickelodeon All-Star Brawl seems to have a lot of promise, with a diverse cast of characters and over 20 levels based on Nick’s history. “With unique moves and attacks drawn directly from their identifiable personalities, each brawler has its own style of play for endless action,” says the publisher GameMill Entertainment on the game’s page. We can’t wait to see what Ludosity has in store for us when the game releases for the PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S, and Nintendo Switch. We’re crossing our fingers that Team Avatar and Timmy Turner will make it to the fight.
