Bleach is one of the longest-running anime series worldwide. It has been airing in Japan since 2001, and continues to run in over 80 countries. The series tells the tale of Ichigo Kurosaki, a high school teenager who is a Shinigami, a death god. The story follows Askin who is the third-in-command of the Soul Society, the afterlife, and follows his missions to cleanse souls of Hollows, demons who have turned evil.
As always, Bleach is a series that has always intrigued me, and a lot of it is due to its characters. I’ve collected a few noteworthy characters that are interesting, and I think I’ve done a pretty good job of categorizing them. After all, I’m not the only one to think of them as “interesting”, so here’s my list.
In honor of the 20th anniversary of “Bleach”, I’ve ranked the original series’ best characters, and the order seems to mirror the story so far!
As part of the original Big Three, it was only a matter of time before Bleach entered the conversation.
And since there’s a lot to say about the reboot, it’s a good time to talk about the series and the characters that made Bleach what it is.
Let’s move on to the most iconic characters in Bleach.
And mind you, these are my favorites, not just the strongest characters – because scolding Bleach would cause an aneurysm in me.
10. Shunsui Kyōraku
It’s a universal law that people with eye patches are the best. Don’t look.
Plus, this person definitely has a flair for the dramatic.
The shadows have never been so terrifying, and I will never be able to go to the theatre again.
More seriously, he is a good contrast to the rest of Saul’s society in that he is not willing to fight to the death at every opportunity.
He’s just chilling here, looking for a teammate.
The fact that he’s one of only two characters with a double-bladed zanpakuto is also a big plus.
9. Yamamoto Shigekuni
Who doesn’t love a cool grandpa every now and then?
Will he support you or will he cast you into the realm of shadows? Who knows?
Then there is the question of how this man associated fire with a compass.
But at least he’s strong as hell.
Don’t let the burnt bodies fool you, he has a sensitive side.
I say sensitive, but what I really mean is that later in the series he finally breaks out of his rules-based mentality.
Small steps.
8. Zaraki Kenpachi
This man chose violence from birth.
And you have to admire how much fun he has playing with his opponents.
The guy doesn’t even know how to use his shikai, but he’s still superior to most opponents. And that doesn’t mean he limits his mental pressure most of the time.
It’s like a Dark Soul boss with a second stage you don’t even see.
Hell, even his own body couldn’t handle his insane strength. It really is the epitome of struggle and violence – and I’m all for it.
7. Unohana Retsu/Yachiru
How much does someone have to dominate you to literally knock you out?
It is said that even a small child can become one if he has enough reyatsu and fighting spirit.
This led to one of the greatest 180 degree turns in anime, where the most bloodthirsty and heinous criminals to ever walk the earth suddenly took the form of a typical head sidekick.
How badly would you have to beat Sveta Yagami to get the same result? All I’m asking for is a friend.
6. Ukitake Jushiro
Surprise, surprise, we have another Shinigami with a double weapon.
I hope my bias is not too obvious.
Although the two duelists have the advantage of being doubly cool, their personalities are opposite in many ways.
Of course, Ukitake will also try to avoid unnecessary conflicts. But unlike the cold gentleman, he will be much more curious.
Fire and ice, I think.
I usually prefer the quieter guys in a show.
But I also love a good tragic story.
And it is certain that the Ukitake brings bad luck.
Not only has he had a Hyakkimaru Lite problem since childhood, but he doesn’t even have the satisfaction of regaining his health.
5. Gin Ichimaru
This guy is practically Itachi without all the bloodshed.
I must say he looks much better than Mr. Sharingan.
He just has the face of a fox. And I’m really surprised they didn’t expose his double agent plan right away.
But as revealing as his face is, his choice of words is another story.
Everything is a blur with this guy.
His firepower is not to be sneezed at either.
Technically, he’s the only person who actually killed Ajzen. And if that doesn’t speak to its power, I don’t know what does.
4. Urahara Kisuke
Roleplayers would love to have cool traders like this.
Of course, it may seem that he doesn’t care what happens.
But this is not true.
This guy was playing 3D chess while we were picking up rocks. With Bancaii allowing him to change reality, no less.
I don’t understand why he only uses his technique once in the series. But beggars can’t be choosers, I guess.
It was also nice to see that all of his accomplishments were finally being recognized by the society that had exiled him.
We love a good comeback story.
3. Aizen Sosuke
When done right, a villainous strand is one of the best and most effective means of building hype an anime can use.
And Bleach definitely did my boy Aizen justice.
Look at that opening!
He rubbed the ground with Ichigo, using only his finger.
The writers had to inject Ichigo with horse steroids to finally get him to turn the corner.
He was a legendary jackbooted villain, probably second only to Ichigo in terms of popularity.
But if you pick it in the Jump Force, we’ll have to switch hands.
2. Ichigo Kurosaki
Ichigo is the kind of protagonist we discover when we watch the anime.
The first time you might think it’s good or a little lame. but after you see the hundredth head of a shounen protagonist screaming the power of nakama, I’m sure you’ll come to appreciate Ichigo.
He’s just doing what he does to protect the people around him.
Depression has slapped him in the face more than once, and he never looks like a simple talkative brat.
He also has the best fights in the whole series, being the main character and all.
1. Kurotsuchi Mayuri
Based on the visual design alone, this guy is pretty unusual.
And originality is certainly one of the main attractions of this figure.
Because the designers couldn’t limit themselves to looks. Oh, no.
They must have given him that weird, babidi bankai.
Of course, he’s also a mad scientist, so there’s no basis here either.
And I’m pretty sure he’s the origin of a trope in which someone’s emotions become so strong that they can’t respond to anything.
Eat your heart out Guozhou
So yeah, the weirdness is very effective when it comes to me and my choice of best characters.Bleach is one of the most popular manga series in the world, and with good reason.
