Alone in the Dark: The New Nightmare

Alone in the Dark

It’s a sad fact that truth is stranger than fiction, and these days fiction is stranger than horror. The video game Alone in the Dark, a survival-horror game in the vein of Silent Hill, was released in 1992, long before it was apparent that the horrors of the modern age would become the norm for so many. The story behind the game was a creepy, gothic tale of a troubled woman, her troubled family, a mysterious cult, and the horrors of the supernatural.

When the lights go out, people can become scarier than they already are. That’s the premise of the horror mobile game Alone in the Dark, which was released in 2013 and was designed to evoke the feeling of horror from the past. The game came out in early 2014 for iOS and Android, and was a hit. However, the game has been wrapped up in controversy lately, due to the inclusion of a “trapped in the library” challenge, which participants have been reporting online.

Alone in the Dark: The New Nightmare is a game that was released in 2009, and it is a prequel to the Alone in the Dark series. The game was developed by the original Alone in the Dark team, and it was released on both the Wii and PlayStation 3.

RETRO – When you hear this phrase from the toothless mouth of a wrinkled, corpse-like old woman lying on her decaying bed in the darkened room of an old castle, your virtual hero’s palms will surely begin to sweat from the grip of his weapon, and you, sitting in front of your screen, will grip your joystick more tightly, blink more often, wonder if you locked your door, and think twice before going to the bathroom on the other side of the apartment. In the PC game market, this effect is most noticeable in survival-horror games, the best-known representatives of which to date are the Alone in the Dark series…

Alone in the Dark

Alfred Hitchcock, the great master of suspense, once said that the opening sequence of bloody murders plays a far more important role in creating fear in his films than the murders themselves. For example, one of the climactic scenes in Psycho is when the detective investigating the murder of Norman Bates walks up the stairs in his own mother’s suit at a disturbingly slow pace, and we can already guess that something terrible is about to happen. I think it’s the same kind of measured tension that made the Alone in the Dark series one of the most memorable action-adventure games of its time, and also established the survival horror genre. So it’s no surprise that fans of the genre have been eagerly awaiting the fourth installment, which is finally out… Edward Carnby is back in the title role, but our hero is unrecognizable, not only to his old fans, but also to his own mother, who has lost her Sherlock Holmes look and is now a young private detective in modern New York, not the 1930s. Infogrames’ website doesn’t explain how this totally unsympathetic man ended up in the modern setting of 2001, but the story is interesting enough that I don’t feel left out. In this story, Carnby investigates the death of an old friend and colleague, Charles Fisk, whose body was found near the mysterious Shadow Island. The trail leads to Obed Morton, a scholar with a passion for the occult, who is rumored to be able to summon terrible otherworldly powers with a few stolen artifacts. Carnby is asked to continue the investigation, and he accepts the assignment, promising to avenge the death of his detective friend.

Carnby and Alyn in the dark

This time, the detective is not alone: He is accompanied by a young and handsome archaeologist, Alin Sedrak. It is assumed that Alyn joined our hero because of the stolen artifacts, but it soon becomes clear that she has personal reasons….. In the first part of the game, our heroes’ plane crashes due to the raging storm (because, of course, that’s the weather we’re flying in…), and the two main characters jump out at the last minute with a parachute and separate. At this point, as in the Resident Evil games, the player must decide whether to choose the sexy Alyn or the traditional Master Karnby. There’s nothing wrong with the plot: Skillfully interspersed with various excerpts from diaries and scrolls, we gradually learn the Morphon family’s terrible secrets, passed down from father to son, which revolve around genetic experiments on humans and aliens.

What can you see in the dark?

The game’s graphics engine consists of the usual hand-drawn, nicely detailed 2D backgrounds and well-drawn 3D characters, similar to the Nocturne and BlairWitch Project series, and it seems to be becoming a trademark of the Alone clones that the characters are ventriloquists, so their mouths don’t move during dialogue. Already we see our heroes explaining themselves with frozen faces and unmoving mouths every time they speak on the radio – when do they ever get it right in these games…? Aside from that little mishap, Carnby is a relatively likable and interesting character (he could have been Agent Mulder if he didn’t have such long hair), and Alyn is, in the trend of Lara Croft, naturally blessed with big lungs and a slim Jennifer Lopez-like ass. These two characters somehow came across more sympathetic to me than, say, the old Alone or the more anonymous and impersonal characters in Nocturne. Besides the appearance of the main characters, the presentation of monsters is the main task of survival horror action games: If they’re not scary enough, our heroes will have to endure the boredom of an agreeable player and digital death by Alt F4. In this respect, New Nightmare only partially lives up to expectations. The main monsters and some lesser creatures can scare you: A few times I was so surprised by a surprise attack that my gamepad almost slipped out of my hand. However, there are also monsters that are quite ridiculous or reminiscent of other games. For example, the slowly limping, gut-slicing zombie-menace bear an uncanny resemblance to the Daemites from The Blair Witch Project, while elsewhere we’re greeted by the brain-sucking insects that jumped us in Half Life… Our flashlights play an important role in the game, as they allow us to spot objects and monsters hiding in the dark. The creators are very proud of the fact that the all-new mesh technology allows different terrain features to cast shadows when a beam of light falls on them, making static backgrounds more realistic and lifelike. Transitional cinemas are also well equipped. There’s a very well done opening trailer at the beginning of the game, cut from the main scenes, but there’s also an excellent introductory movie, and the creators didn’t skimp on the various cinematics shown during the main events. The music is rather intimidating at times, but technically it’s on par with the Amiga. It gave me a nice, nostalgic feeling, but I’m afraid that’s not true for everyone….. The Darkworks team didn’t excel when it came to sound either: In many places you can’t hear the sound of rain (although you can see it drizzling), and in other places some sounds are just muffled. It’s rather awkward, to say the least: Sometimes I wondered what object had been hit to create this wretched effect…..

Lovecraftian atmosphere not lost but transformed….

But this is where Alone in the Dark still stands out from its clones (particularly the Resident Evil series). The excellent story kept me coming back to the game, despite the sometimes overly complicated puzzles, finding keys and locked doors, or the antics of the monsters. And for fans of the genre and series, I highly recommend the fourth volume: Fortunately, the atmosphere of Lovecraftian gothic horror is not lost in the real and virtual of 2001…. – BadSector(2001)-
