Sherlock Holmes is back!
Sherlock Holmes: The Devil’s Daughter is the first in a planned trilogy of games set in the world of Sherlock Holmes. You will play as a young woman whose father has been murdered. The only clues you have to work with are the old detective’s journals and the strange letters he receives. Can you solve the mystery before it’s too late?
The Sherlock Holmes video game series launched in 2003 with Sherlock Holmes Consulting Detective, followed by the successful re-release of the first game in 2009. Since then, there have been a total of five or six games released, and the last one came out in 2012.

His latest title, however, is Sherlock Holmes: Chapter One, which is currently in development, will change the usual rhythm of the previous games and be closer to their previous opus The Sinking City. We recently got the chance to try out the Early Access version of the game, which gave us a glimpse of what to expect from the full version of the game. Here’s our Early Access preview of Sherlock Holmes: Chapter one, where we roll up our sleeves (or our sleeve) and try to find the diamond stolen by the ghost. Sherlock Holmes: The first chapter is set on the beautiful island of Cordon, where Sherlock Holmes arrives with his friend John to visit his mother’s grave, but certain events lead him to believe that the case is much more complex than he thought, and so he begins a thorough investigation into his mother’s death. His friend John is a loyal friend, but his reality is also strange and goes beyond the usual friendship one would expect. Upon his arrival on Cordon Island, Sherlock is immediately drawn into the world of investigation. He starts his stay with a robbery and a murder case in the hotel where he is staying. Early Access version of Sherlock Holmes: Chapter 1, which was made available to us by Frogwares, contains a main case and a side case, although the side case seems very short. From the beginning of pre-assembly, I was immersed in a diamond theft case that turned into a murder, and we were tasked with solving it. The investigation was thorough and ultimately satisfactory. Of course, there are no clues in things, which means you have to rack your brain to find clues and figure out what to do next. However, there are other useful mechanisms in the game that allow you to combine clues and draw conclusions that will help you throughout the game. One of these locations is the Mind Palace, which also appeared in Frogwares’ earlier game The Sinking City and found its way to Sherlock Holmes: Chapter 1. There are other useful mechanics in the game, such as access to police files, city records, and other documents, but access was limited in the demo I got, although I did go to the police station to find some documents in their archives. I was pleased to see that in addition to these tried-and-true mechanics, the game also offers new ones to aid us in our investigation, such as eavesdropping, using disguises, and displaying on-screen clues to question the audience on a particular topic. The most useful feature I found was the eavesdropping, as it really helped me solve the game’s first murder case. Unfortunately, I wasn’t able to fully explore the stealth mechanism in this release, nor were the other new exploration mechanisms implemented in the game, but they all look promising and I look forward to trying them out in a future release or in the full version of the game when it comes out. In the game, I learned the technique of sneaking, but I couldn’t use it in the things I covered in the games because sneaking wasn’t necessary. Sherlock also has a focus mode that allows you to focus at the touch of a button and get different details about the world around you and specific objects. With this mechanism, I could discover, for example, that the door lock is very weak and can be easily looted, as well as a cosmetics bag with a hidden compartment underneath. The symbol of such an object resembles a two-dimensional cloud of the Drowned City, which can be entered to form a crime scene. They will also form crime scenes in Sherlock Holmes: Chapter 1, and the process is pretty much the same: first you have to find all the evidence on the ground, and then form a crime scene. I took full advantage of the limited access to the game’s open world that I had, and explored a lot of it. The world around you certainly seems alive, with people going about their business and working. There are also several merchants that may be available in the full version of the game, but I couldn’t reach them in the demo, including a clothing merchant and a furniture merchant. There was also a newspaper vendor from whom I had bought the previous day’s paper, and I was pleased to see an article about my previously solved murder case. It shows how the world reacts to the different events that take place in it, which is a significant difference from all previous versions of Frogwares. I am very excited to see what the full open world game has to offer. With a game like Sherlock Holmes: The presentation of sound and dialogue plays an important role in the first chapter, to which the developers have paid particular attention. Their investigations are full of dialogue, and each character has dialogue based on their personality. The voice actors reasonably match the appearance of the characters they portray, and I almost never felt that a character’s voice didn’t match their appearance or personality. This also brings me to the character design, which is also realistic. While investigating, you also have to observe the different actions and appearances to form their personalities, and this is where you can see the realistic character design presented in the game. I don’t think it’s fair to talk too much about the technical aspect of the game right now, since it’s still a fairly early version of the game. Almost every aspect of Sherlock Holmes Chapter One is still in development, including graphics, gameplay mechanics, and general gameplay tweaks, but I’ll detail my experience with the game. There were a few notable gaps in the sequences, especially as I explored the city. It seemed busy in town, as I couldn’t find a restricted area, but the falling window frames kept me from venturing too far into town. I was told to expect some visual issues, but aside from occasional frame drops, I don’t recall any other graphical issues with this version. There were also no problems during the game. I have a reasonable Ryzen 7 with a Radeon RX 6800, and the game ran flawlessly on that one. I also tried it on an older R9 290, and it seems to work fine on that too, but the frame drop was stronger. This is to be expected as the game is still in development and not optimized at this time. The graphics will also be improved in the final version of the game. Still, even at this stage, the game looked decent, but not comparable to the modern games we have today. So I’m looking forward to the visuals for the full version, as Cordon Island is really picturesque and will look fantastic with the improved visuals. After spending about 5 hours in the Early Access version of Sherlock Holmes: Chapter One, I can honestly say that Frogwares has taken all the good aspects of their previous games and made them even better. If you’ve played The Sinking City, you’ll find a lot of familiar mechanics here, but they’ve all been improved and are now in top form. It certainly looks fresh, but we haven’t seen Frogwares combine action with a franchise with a lot of research. We’ve only seen a glimpse of the game so far, and we still have a lot of Sherlock Holmes Chapter 1 to see and experience, but my first impressions of the game are extremely positive, even based on the unfinished version. Frogwares certainly takes a fresh approach with this new game, and it’s interesting to note that it’s nothing like its previous Sherlock Holmes games. It’s much more like The Sinking City, and I’m sure Frogware will use The Sinking City as a basis for more and better mechanics. Sherlock Holmes Chapter 1 is a perfect example of this, as it can easily be said to be the best version of Drowning City, with a new look and setting. I’m looking forward to the release of Sherlock Holmes Chapter One and can’t wait to try out the combat aspect of the game. The fabled consulting detective sees Holmes in an early access preview.
