There was a time when “The Show” was the only baseball game worth playing, but those days are gone. EA’s franchise is still very popular, and still very good, and 2K’s franchise is only getting stronger with each passing year. However, when it comes to baseball games, “The Show” is once again king.
There are a few things that MLB The Show 21 gets right. The game looks as good as it ever has, and the animations are silky smooth. (And if that isn’t enough, the game is bringing back the card-collecting mode from years past.) The commentary has been expanded, with more player-specific lines and fewer generic calls.
After downloading MLB The Show 21 to my Xbox, I was greeted by the strangest thing ever. I could never get used to PlayStation Studios’ new Marvel video on the Xbox console. A Sony game on a competing console is certainly a new concept, but it won’t have an impact if the game is bad. Fortunately, despite the game being based on one of the most mundane sports, MLB The Show 21 is actually quite fun. It’s a lot more fun than watching a real baseball game, that’s for sure.
Baseball games can be quite difficult for the uninitiated, given the mass of different playing styles and functions that must be performed during a game. This is where MLB The Show 21 shines the most. I was shocked at how customizable the gameplay is. You can adjust the level of realism of each game, the controls and the number of actions to be performed.
You hate pitching and you just want to hit? Here’s what you can do. Want to give up defending altogether and let the AI do all the work on the field for you? You can do this too. Finally, do you want to simplify your control of the course as you expect from the game of golf? Go ahead, it’s your game. I don’t think I’ve ever seen such a user-friendly approach in a sports game, and it makes MLB The Show 21 accessible to people like me who know little about the sport.
If you’re a beginner like me, the game’s beautiful and detailed tutorials teach you everything you need to know about the sport in a clear and intuitive way. In a few minutes you will learn all the positions, roles and rules of this sport. When you’re done learning, set the difficulty curve to automatically increase or decrease depending on your level of play, and go have fun.
MLB The Show 21, like its predecessors, features all major and minor league teams with updated rosters and highly detailed MLB-approved stadiums. Like most big budget sports games on the market, it has a great selection of licensed songs to listen to outside of the games. There’s reggaeton, indie rock and even the new (and very unfortunate) AC/DC hit Shot in the Dark. There’s even plenty of commentary from real baseball announcers during the games. Overall, there is nothing to complain about in this regard. The trick works, even if the sport itself isn’t exciting enough for commentators to change their minds after a home run.
The FIFA Ultimate Team-inspired fantasy baseball mode is as worthless as its inspiration. This is just to encourage you to spend more money on packages to improve your reach. Fortunately, you can (and should) completely ignore this game type and focus on what I think is the biggest strength of MLB The Show 21: Way to show fashion. It’s a typical Be a Pro mode where you’re a promising young player making your way from the minor leagues to World Series glory, but I was impressed with the amount of detail put into this mode.
There’s a lot to do in Road to the Show, aside from the obvious fights of course, from the goofy looking editor to the training minigames. You can tell the coach what you prefer – hitting or pitching, suggest your favorite positions, etc. You can also equip your character with a variety of baseball-specific items, such as bats, gloves and cleats, to improve their stats. This adds an unexpected layer of role-playing mechanics to MLB The Show 21. Finally, there is a game mode for creating stadiums, but it pales in comparison to the game modes for editing other sports games like AO Tennis 2.
Although the game was released on next-gen consoles (and I still can’t believe I played it on Xbox), you shouldn’t view MLB The Show 21 as a worthy demonstration of what the franchise should look like in the coming years. It’s a transition game that looks like a PS4 game in terms of graphics and load times, even though it runs incredibly well and at an idiotically high resolution. The players look a bit repulsive, and their animations could be improved. I expect next year’s MLB game to impress me much more with its graphics, but this 2021 iteration still serves its purpose.
MLB The Show 21 is worth playing on the Xbox Series S and X, and not just for the novelty. It’s a very good baseball game that is surprisingly accessible to people who know absolutely nothing about the sport, while being exactly what veterans and fans expect from an annual update to a sports franchise. Not really what I expected from a next-gen sports game, but it’s a step in the right direction. And I can’t believe I’m going to be looking forward to a brand new baseball video game every year now.
|It’s still not quite what you’d expect from a next-gen sports game, but it looks good enough and runs at 60 frames per second the whole time.||The way you can customize the gameplay is absolutely amazing. For example, you can customize the game to your preferences. B. If you want to pitch or hit.|
|Lots of commentary and licensed music when you’re on the menu. You certainly don’t need more than that, although the music selection, while good, is a little too broad.||The FIFA Ultimate Team-inspired mode sucks, but MLB The Show 21 has more than enough content and customization options. This makes it an interesting sports game, even for those who find real baseball very boring.|
|Final decision: 7.5|

Frequently Asked Questions
Will there be a MLB the show 21?
Both teams have announced that they are in the process of making their own baseball game that will be released in the next few years. While it is a little disappointing that there will be no new major league baseball the show 21 this year, it is worth mentioning that both of these games had very low development costs. While it is not certain that these games will be as good as the show 21, it is likely that they will be better than the 10. It is not yet clear whether there will be a MLB the show 21. Sony is yet to announce a release date, although it is expected that something will be released sometime before the start of the Major League Baseball season in March. Sony has kept its cards close to its chest, so it is impossible to know anything for sure. MLB the show 20 was released in March last year, so it would make sense for Sony to do the same this year. The last game released was MLB the Show 19, which was released in March 2018.
What should I do first in MLB 20 The Show?
If you’re new to the world of baseball games, your first MLB experience probably started in the franchise mode. This is where you take control of a team and guide them to a championship as you control every aspect of your team, from what pitchers you start on which days, to making roster moves to acquiring new players. You can even play out whole seasons in franchise mode, just as you would a real-life season. However, every game in the franchise mode has a consequence, so you have to be careful with how you play your cards. Play the tutorial. It’s important to establish a good foundation for your franchise early on. You’ll want to get a feel for the game mechanics and a decent understanding of each team’s strengths and weaknesses. From there, the sky’s the limit. Just remember, winning the World Series won’t happen overnight.
Will MLB The Show 20 be on PS5?
The PS4 has been on the market for the past 4 years, and it doesn’t look like Sony is planning on releasing a new console anytime soon. This means that the PS4 is probably closer to the end of its life cycle than the beginning. So, as a sports gamer, I’m thinking that MLB The Show 20 will be the first game to be released for PS5. Here’s why I think this: The MLB The Show series has always been on PlayStation’s cutting edge of graphics and gameplay, and it seems unlikely that the developers would want to wait until PS5 to release a game that they could still have a lot of fun with on PS4. The upcoming PS5 is poised to be a revolution in home gaming consoles, but will it be a revolution in baseball video games as well? It’s still too early to tell, but we can make some educated guesses.
