Naruto Shippuden: Eventually, the entire ninja action quadrilogy will be available on a small hybrid console. This game is the latest in an excellent series of 3D ninja fighting games developed by CyberConnect2, featuring a wide selection of games, animated cel graphics and a first-class voice acting. In other words, it’s a must for any anime or manga fan.

The story of the game begins at the beginning of the 4th major arc in the history of the Anime Ninja War. The storylines are fully dubbed in English, Japanese, Spanish and Brazilian Portuguese. I played it with Japanese dub and English subtitles because that’s how I saw the anime, so it was nice to hear authenticity.  The storylines in the game are largely static images of the anime with talking characters, which made me wonder why the developers didn’t just use excerpts from the anime if they went to such lengths to make it look like the series. This presentation is quickly overtaken by a five-minute cutscene after each fight. So if you want to play this game instead of watching the anime Naruto, I wouldn’t recommend it. But if you’ve already seen the movie, as I have, it serves as a good reminder of the story. I haven’t watched an episode since the anime ended a few years ago, so it was really nice to get back into the world of shinobi.

All four of them. The Great Ninja War is essentially the culmination of Naruto’s history, so you can imagine that many of the best fights in the series take place during this arc. It was great to experience these battles the right way, right down to the source. Fights like Gi Sensei v Madara Uchiha and Kakashi v Obito are so much fun to do again.

The story mode offers two separate courses for players, one for Naruto and one for his possessed Sasuke. Because I got to play so many different characters throughout the story, the battles are never boring because there are so many different characters with different versions and totally different moves to use. Ultimate Ninja Storm 4 also includes content from the DLC The Road to Boruto, which features the story of Boruto’s first movie (Naruto’s Son).

This game also features the largest number of playable ninjas with a huge selection of 124 different shinobi! The characters span different periods of Naruto’s universe, from the original Naruto to Naruto Shippuden and Boruto.

In battle, you will form a three-person team consisting of a leader and two supporting ninjas. Yes, you can have a team of all Narutos if you want. Each character has their own special attacks, play style and support moves. So it takes time to learn all the different movements and ideal commands. Battles look and play good. If you’ve ever played any of the other Ninja Storm games, you already know how to play them, because practically nothing has changed.

As you complete the battles and progress through the story, you can unlock items that you can spend on in-game items, such as battle phrases for characters and more. Once the story is over, it is recommended to play the adventure mode, where the player controls Naruto while completing ninja missions that take place after the Great War. Some of these missions involve flashback battles, such as Naruto versus Gaara, making it seem like it was a lifetime ago. The missions aren’t particularly interesting, being mostly quests, but it was fun to walk through the ninja world and talk to characters recovering from the war, which the anime didn’t really cover.

Ultimate Ninja Storm 4 looks great on the Switch in manual and docked mode. I played in portable mode for the most part and there was no frame rate drop or slow loading time, which was good. Much of the music and soundtrack seems to have been taken directly from the anime, which of course is fantastic. CyberConnect2 really screwed up the presentation.

Naruto Shippuden: Ultimate Ninja Storm 4 Road to Boruto is a great example of a cartoon-inspired action game. With tons of playable characters and one of the best stories in Japanese anime, I can’t recommend this game enough if you’re a fan of Naruto.

Final thoughts : EXAMPLES

The latest entry in the Ninja Storm franchise builds on what the popular series is known for: the action of the great ninjas. If you’re a fan of Naruto, you won’t be disappointed. This one won’t be missed.

Tony has been playing since he could walk. Pokémon Blue Version helped him learn to read. His greatest achievement is not only that he has played the entire Kingdom Hearts series, but that he has understood it.
