Becoming President
As El Presidente, you are the omniscient and omnipotent dictator of Tropico, a small island state somewhere in the Caribbean. You need to build a prosperous city and at the same time take care of the needs of your citizens and the many factions and superpowers beyond. The ultimate goal of the game is to stay in power and keep your office. You can be a good dictator or rule with an iron fist. Anyway, when you play Tropico, you have your eternal favourite, Penultimo, to guide you through basic mechanics and introduce you briefly to some basic concepts.

More layers than onions
Since I never play Tropico, I have to say that it is a strategic game where there are more layers than onions. This is not just a game of simple builders. Economics, politics and presidential elections – these are all things that come to mind, and sometimes there are a lot of them.
However, there is a complete storyline with 5 chapters to help you understand the basics and advanced gameplay. It is adorned with a humorous dialogue and also establishes a relationship between a sovereign/slave between you as El Presidente and the unpretentious Penultimo. But it’s also an in-depth tutorial that shows you the different possibilities. Some of the tasks it contains will be repeated, because you will often do the same thing over and over again.

Various game modes
The Full History mode has added a sandbox mode with stacks of cards to play with, and you can customize the settings to your liking. Finally, a mission regime in which you perform 15 specific missions, such as smuggling, logistics and independence. With 3 levels of difficulty: easy, normal and difficult to choose. You start your game in the early 1900’s and go through four eras. There is the colonial era, the era of the world wars, the era of the cold war and the modern era. Each of these eras has its own buildings and challenges, especially what the citizens demand of you, but also the superpowers that interact with you. It would also be fair to say that the more you make progress, the greater the difficulties will be in any era.
Objectives such as the export of gold or the construction of a tannery had to be achieved. Your main goal in Tropico 6 is to create and maintain an effective city plan that implements all aspects of your citizens’ daily lives. In the first place, the citizens will not ask too much, except for housing and prosperity, so that it is enough to build mines and farms and export the goods.

The need for a prosperous economy

Keep your citizens happy
You will spend your time providing adequate housing, entertainment, access to religion, health care and education to your citizens when your work requires it. However, there are many tools available to help you keep an overview, such as a heat map indicating areas of high crime or low freedom.
You can achieve different returns on your investments through different commercial channels. In general, these tools are practical if you want to maximize your economy and create a sustainable tropical empire with a happy population. Finally, happy employees will earn the country’s money and vote for El Presidente!

Miracles of the world
In Mission mode, there are different island terrains to play and different time periods in which they are set. It rarely feels like you’re always doing the same thing in campaign mode during missions. In some missions you start with a country that is not in the loop and you have to change it radically, whether it’s political or in terms of infrastructure. Others see that you have to raise a certain amount of money or get support from one of the factions, like the communists or the church.
Decades go by and new buildings and technologies are opened up. But my favorite feature for today is the ability to get miracles out of the world. The construction of Pirate Bay makes it possible to send a team of pirates led by the eternal faithful Penultimo and steal a monument from another nation. In addition to improving the landscape, sites such as the Eiffel Tower and the Statue of Liberty offer various bonuses for your island. And there’s nothing to stop you from collecting them all and spreading them all over the island. It is very amusing to see the Statue of Liberty standing near a tropical communist island.

Different types of buildings
The construction in Tropico 6 is quite simple. I like the way the menu is executed in the game. When you press the ZL button, a construction wheel segmented into different building types/functions appears. All you have to do is choose the building you want to build, find a good place for it and let your hardworking citizens do the rest. If you’re as impatient as I am, you can shorten the time considerably and complete construction in seconds.

But not everyone plays six sails at Tropico. There have been several cases where the symbol has appeared above certain buildings during the game, such as a mine. I have no idea why the icon appeared above the building. And after looking at the almanacs and the building information screen, I finally found the answer. Some things are not clear from the start and are not explained in detail to the player. In general, however, you can find the answer to your situation in the Almanac if you study it sufficiently.

Visual aids and controls
Under your command are three islands, all as beautiful as any tropical paradise you’ve seen in the games. There is also an incredible amount of detail found in every part of everyday life on the island. You can zoom out and record the whole nation at once. You can also personally get close to any citizen travelling in your area. If you look at them, you often see them go to bars where they spend money. It’s quite nice to see how your citizens do their daily work.
Tropico 6 works quite well with the Nintendo switch. However, there is an earthquake with a strange field of vision if your island is very built if you panic with the camera. But it’s not a break in the game, sometimes it’s just a distraction.
The game is controlled by Joy-Consultants, and the management seems pretty intuitive to me. Some aspects of the game can be controlled via the touch screen, such as closing the menu, because it is not fully controlled by the touch screen.

Tropico 6: A long-awaited edition of Nintendo Switch Strategy. It offers many hours of solid, in-depth strategy and simulation. For example, as a big fan of civilization, I am glad that Tropico 6 has appeared on a counter.
If you, like me, enjoy a good strategy game where you can get lost for a few hours, which is a good challenge, this could be a game for you!
